Who are the Vessels of God's Wrath?

What the word "wrath" in Romans 5 doesn't mean wrath

Hi friends,

I learned something that I’m happy to share with you. This clearer understanding of Paul’s argument in Romans allows us to better realize the love and goodness of God.

ROMANS 5:9 (NIV)

Since we have now been justified by [Christ’s] blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

I’ve been exploring the insights of David Bentley Hart and today’s short video (under 6 minutes at youtube.com/@Sparkmymuse) gives us a sense of what God is up to without the need to ignore our moral intuitions.

One of the best insights I’ve started to metabolize is that if God, as spoken of in Scripture, seems like a monster, or less than good, there is a moral inconsistency.

Too many teachings in the Christian tradition create a bind for us by presenting God as less than good. When our spirit-filled intuition lets us know something is not right, we are supposed to tuck all that away and pretend the incongruity doesn’t exist.

We are told things like, “God is Sovereign and can do whatever he wants” or some version of “if God does it, and it seems wrong or monstrous to our intuition, we must not be upset about that” .

The reality is, people, who aren’t fully good, speak for God. We they describe God as punitive or hateful, they describe themselves more than they describe God. God is good and this logic must follow all the way through.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic.
