The Thick Agenda of Sentimentalism

Karen Swallow Prior on the manipulation of cloying art for political propaganda

Today is a video reading and reflection of an important article by Karen Swallow Prior written for RNS on July 10.

Our time of digital meaning-making gives us a firehose of input; and understanding the purpose of leveraging Sentimentalism (and a actually knowing what Sentimentalism means) is more important now, than ever.

A phony, cloying, or wildly inaccurate depiction of the past doesn’t help to create a world we want to live in now. This is true for the creator, musician, writer, and artist, but when a regime employs such tactics of Sentimentalism? We are wise to pay attention to the agenda that is being pushed and who loses out.

Not just noticing, but actively opposing this.

Perhaps you ask, “But why bother?”

One big reason is because a Democracy consists of and derives its unique power and impact for good, from the participation, input, and inclusion of all the people.

This literally means we advocate for diversity of people in power, and equity for all people, and inclusion of all types. But, do you get a sense that only certain types of people who look certain ways are allowed to be a part of what “makes America great”?

To coin a phrase, I offer this:

Homogeny is for shelf stable milk, not for Democracies.

The wealthy and the poor, the privileged and the under-privileged, the citizen, the immigrant, and the residents represented by those who elected them. Special protection or preference for some, should not be tolerated. Exclusion should NOT be tolerated.

When a demographic, group, or sector is disdained, tormented, and singled out for extra-judicial harm, persecution, or worse treatment—the people must respond unequivocally. We must actively push against this perversions to our democracy. We must stand up and in the way of people trying to further such perversion and we must dismantle anything that keeps it going.
